Based out of Walnut Studios, Blank Canvases Youth Arts Camp uses the city of Toronto and Toronto artists as the inspiration for lessons and art projects. With an emphasis on contemporary art practices, material explorations and active learning, the aim is to introduce and guide young people in their development as artists. Portfolio building is also an important aspect of the program. Walnut’s spacious warehouse atmosphere in the heart of liberty village provides a creative environment for youth to experiment with different ways of art making. There will be many opportunities to encounter artists who are actively involved in our local art scene and use the studio facilities all year round. A mix of hands-on and interpretive teaching strategies make for an easily accessible experience for any young person who is interested in visual arts. Our instructors are experienced artists and art educators who have studied the arts and carry on their own practices. We dedicate individual attention to realizing goals (personal and communal) that participants will set throughout their journey in Blank Canvases Youth Art Camp. Participants will explore contemporary techniques such as assemblage, drawing, painting, sculpting, printing techniques, working with found and re-used materials, and collage. Participants are also exposed to wellness activities related to being productive artists such as outdoor walks, swimming (summer sessions only), and visualisation techniques.
