Inspired by the vibrant and expressive portraits of First Nations Anishinaabe artist Arthur Shilling, students will explore how colour, shape, and expressive mark-making can communicate personality, emotion, and identity. Students will learn about Shilling’s artistic practice and explore elements of his unique style while developing their own understanding of colour theory and art vocabulary.
Students will then create an expressive portrait of someone in their community, using colour and the elements and principles of design to capture the person’s character and individuality. Rather than simply creating a realistic likeness, students are encouraged to experiment, make creative choices, and develop their own unique artistic style and visual language.

Students will:
Explore the artwork and artistic practice of Arthur Shilling
Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)
Explore principles of design, with a focus on variety, proportion, and contrast
Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices, such as portraiture, expressionism, proportion, painting techniques, style
Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts to create an expressionist portrait
Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable, supportive environment by a professional Artist Educator
Apply critical thinking in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork

Yes! We provide all art supplies and materials required for each lesson.

One lesson is a half-day length, which is approximately 3 hours. This timeframe accounts for:
set-up (45 minutes)
lesson time (2 hours)
clean-up (30 minutes)

Blank Canvases follows the maximum class sizes below:
JK-SK (30 students)
Grade 1-3 (20 students)
Grade 4-8 (30 students)
One lesson is restricted to one class. Classes cannot be combined to reach the maximum size.

Yes! We highly encourage booking for a full-day, meaning two lessons (one in the AM and one class in the PM).
For example, you can connect with another teacher interested in booking the other half-day.
In doing so, you help our Art Educators teach a full day of at your school.
