Inspired by the bold portraits of Toronto-based artist Benny Bing, an artist of Nigerian descent, students will explore how colour, composition, and expressive painting techniques can bring a portrait to life. Students will learn about Bing’s approach to portraiture and his use of vibrant and complementary acrylic colours to create depth, energy, and personality.
Students will experiment with colour theory, art vocabulary, and the elements and principles of design as they create their own expressionist portrait using acrylic paints. Through the process, students are encouraged to make bold colour choices, explore different painting techniques, and develop a portrait that reflects their own creative style and unique personality.

Explore the artwork and artistic practice of Benny Bing
Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)
Explore principles of design, with a focus on variety, emphasis, proportion, and balance
Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices, such as portraiture, expressionism, proportion, painting techniques, style
Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts to create an expressionist portrait
Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable, supportive environment by a professional Artist Educator
Apply critical thinking in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork

Yes! We provide all art supplies and materials required for each lesson.

One lesson is a half-day length, which is approximately 3 hours. This timeframe accounts for:
set-up (45 minutes)
lesson time (2 hours)
clean-up (30 minutes)

Blank Canvases follows the maximum class sizes below:
JK-SK (30 students)
Grade 1-3 (20 students)
Grade 4-8 (30 students)
One lesson is restricted to one class. Classes cannot be combined to reach the maximum size.

Yes! We highly encourage booking for a full-day, meaning two lessons (one in the AM and one class in the PM).
For example, you can connect with another teacher interested in booking the other half-day.
In doing so, you help our Art Educators teach a full day of at your school.
