Inspired by the bold imagery and distinctive subject matter of Canadian artist Charles Pachter, students will explore how artists can use familiar objects, animals, and symbols to communicate ideas about identity, culture, and personal experiences. Students will consider the images and symbols that are meaningful to them and discover how everyday things can become powerful forms of self-expression.
Students will then design and paint their own “Me” Pattern, combining personally meaningful symbols and imagery with colour, repetition, and composition. Through this creative process, students will explore how art and design can communicate who they are while developing their own symbolic visual language.

Students will:
Explore the artwork and artistic practice of Charles Pachter
Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)
Explore principles of design, with a focus on repetition, rhythm, contrast, and variety
Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices, such as colour theory, colour mixing, stencilling, and patterns
Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts to create a pattern painting of personal symbols
Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable, supportive environment by a professional Artist Educator
Apply critical thinking in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork

Yes! We provide all art supplies and materials required for each lesson.

One lesson is a half-day length, which is approximately 3 hours. This timeframe accounts for:
set-up (45 minutes)
lesson time (2 hours)
clean-up (30 minutes)

Blank Canvases follows the maximum class sizes below:
JK-SK (30 students)
Grade 1-3 (20 students)
Grade 4-8 (30 students)
One lesson is restricted to one class. Classes cannot be combined to reach the maximum size.

Yes! We highly encourage booking for a full-day, meaning two lessons (one in the AM and one class in the PM).
For example, you can connect with another teacher interested in booking the other half-day.
In doing so, you help our Art Educators teach a full day of at your school.
