Inspired by the layered and textural artwork of Canadian artist Chris Walsh, students will explore how artists can transform everyday materials and 2D ideas into imaginative three-dimensional forms. Students will examine Walsh’s techniques and processes while considering how found objects, textures, and unexpected materials can be combined to create meaning and visual interest.
Students will design and construct their own found-object map sculptures using materials such as wood, carpet, textiles, and items from the recycling bin. Through layering, assembling, and experimentation, students will transform discarded and familiar objects into a unique 3D artwork. Students are encouraged to bring safe, clean materials from their recycling bins at home to incorporate into their sculptures.

Students will:
Explore the artwork and artistic practice of Chris Walsh
Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)
Explore principles of design, with a focus on repetition, rhythm, variety, and proportion
Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices, such as 2D and 3D, layering, assembly, up-cycling
Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts to create a found-object map sculpture
Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable, supportive environment by a professional Artist Educator
Apply critical thinking in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork

Yes! We provide all art supplies and materials required for each lesson.

One lesson is a half-day length, which is approximately 3 hours. This timeframe accounts for:
set-up (45 minutes)
lesson time (2 hours)
clean-up (30 minutes)

Blank Canvases follows the maximum class sizes below:
JK-SK (30 students)
Grade 1-3 (20 students)
Grade 4-8 (30 students)
One lesson is restricted to one class. Classes cannot be combined to reach the maximum size.

Yes! We highly encourage booking for a full-day, meaning two lessons (one in the AM and one class in the PM).
For example, you can connect with another teacher interested in booking the other half-day.
In doing so, you help our Art Educators teach a full day of at your school.
