Inspired by the vibrant textile-based portraits of Bahamian/Toronto-based artist Gio Swaby, students will explore how portraiture, pattern, colour, and fabric can communicate identity, confidence, and self-expression. Students will learn about Swaby’s use of bold patterned textiles and striking poses to celebrate Black identity and feminine strength, while considering how artists can use personal experiences and visual choices to tell meaningful stories.

Using fabric, collage, and mixed-media techniques, students will create their own empowering portrait inspired by the people, experiences, and aspects of their background that are meaningful to them. Students are encouraged to experiment with pattern, colour, texture, and composition to create a portrait that reflects their own identity and creative voice.
