lesson objective

By exploring the artwork of Joyce Wieland, students will learn her techniques and processes, and her use of quilting to convey her messages. Students will learn the themes of craft vs. art, traditional female craftwork, text in artwork, and communal art making. Students will use the elements and principles of design to create an “Art Quilt”, a quilt square around a common theme that expresses their individual perspective on it.

Students will:

Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices (collage, composition, fabric art, contrasting colours/shapes/textures)

Explore principles of design, particularly balance, variety, harmony

Learn about a local artist and their art

Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts

Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

Apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork
