Inspired by the iconic landscapes of the Group of Seven, students will explore how Canadian artists transformed the rugged landscapes of Ontario into expressive works of art. Students will examine how the artists used colour, shape, line, texture, and composition to capture the character and atmosphere of the natural world.
Students will then create their own landscape painting inspired by the places and natural environments around them. Using the elements and principles of design, students will experiment with colour, shape, and composition to develop a unique interpretation of the Canadian landscape on canvas or mat board.

Students will:
Explore the artwork and artistic practice of the Group of Seven
Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)
Explore principles of design, with a focus on variety, balance, and unity
Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices, such as landscapes, painting techniques, horizon lines, underpainting
Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts to create an Canadian landscape inspired painting
Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable, supportive environment by a professional Artist Educator
Apply critical thinking in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork

Yes! We provide all art supplies and materials required for each lesson.

One lesson is a half-day length, which is approximately 3 hours. This timeframe accounts for:
set-up (45 minutes)
lesson time (2 hours)
clean-up (30 minutes)

Blank Canvases follows the maximum class sizes below:
JK-SK (30 students)
Grade 1-3 (20 students)
Grade 4-8 (30 students)
One lesson is restricted to one class. Classes cannot be combined to reach the maximum size.

Yes! We highly encourage booking for a full-day, meaning two lessons (one in the AM and one class in the PM).
For example, you can connect with another teacher interested in booking the other half-day.
In doing so, you help our Art Educators teach a full day of at your school.
