The landscape paintings of the Group of Seven are some of the most famous in the world. In exploring the work of the Group of Seven, students will learn about how they used the rugged landscape of Ontario as their inspiration and subject matter. Students will use the elements and principles of design to create their own landscape paintings on canvas or mat board.

Students will:

Learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices (landscape, horizon line, glazing, underpainting, scratching)

Explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)

Explore principles of design, particularly variety, balance, unity

Learn about local artists and their art

Have an opportunity to explore the materials, tools and concepts

Be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

Apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork
