Charles Pachter:  “Me” Pattern Paintings

Lesson Objective

Charles Pachter creates art that has become iconic Canadian images and symbolic of Canada’s identity, history and culture. His work, often known for depicting the Moose or his famous streetcar series, is both symbolic and also very personal. Through examining his artwork and discussing his choice of subject matter, students will think about what symbols or images are meaningful to them. Students will then create a drawing that illustrates their understanding of design and self-identity through the creation of a pattern in their artwork.

Materials

  • Pencil, eraser

  • Papers for sketching – A4 size or similar 

  • Sharpie or similar black marker

  • Any one colouring medium – markers / pencil crayons / watercolours / pastels

  • If using watercolours – then brushes, palette, and water cup required

  • A4 size (or similar) cardstock or thick paper for final artwork (if available)
