Group of Seven: Landscape Painting

Grade level: 3-8

Lesson length time:  Two Hours

Lesson Objective

The landscape paintings of the Group of Seven are some of the most famous in the world. Students will learn about this well known group of Toronto painters who used the rugged landscape of Ontario as their inspiration and subject matter. Students will be instructed in how to create their own impressionist landscape collage.

Materials

  • Pencil, eraser

  • Scissors

  • White glue or glue stick

  • Papers for sketching – A4 size or similar 

  • Sharpie or similar black marker

  • Assorted colour markers or pencil crayons

  • Assorted papers for collage – construction paper, magazines, newspapers, fliers (in a variety of colours)

  • A4 size (or similar) cardstock or thick paper as a base (if available)

Learning Outcomes

Students Will:

  • learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices (landscape, horizon line, glazing, underpainting, scratching, etc)

  • explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)

  • explore principles of design, particularly variety (gr. 3), emphasis (gr. 4), proportion (gr. 5), balance (gr. 6)

  • learn about a local historical artist group and their art

  • have an opportunity to explore with materials and concepts

  • be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

  • apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of art work and creation of their own art work

  • work collaboratively with peers
